Mean Who You Are

I love reading and writing. I read most genres but my favourites would be paranormal romances and inspirational/motivational books. I have mostly started this blog because I love to read so much and want to share my reviews and thoughts with the world or anyone who wants to read it, giving my little bit of input to the world as well as any topics of light that would help and motivate you. I am also an aspiring author, in between reading books and reviewing them, I am writing two separate books, one fiction and one non-fiction. I have too many books and Ebooks, enough to last me probably 2 lifetimes! You can never have enough books... he he

Book Review: The Rising (The Painted Maidens #1) by Terra Harmony

The Rising (The Painted Maidens Trilogy) (Volume 1) - Terra Harmony

Series: The Painted Maiden #1
Publisher: Patchwork Press
Publication Date: 07 November 2013
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy
Source: NetGalley / Publisher (In exchange for an honest Review)

Goodreads Synopsis:
Fifteen-year-old Serena is the youngest member of a dying race. The increasing acidity of the ocean is destroying her home, slowly eating away at the once thriving underwater landscape. But since the night of Serena’s birth, it is an outside force that most threatens their dwindling population. Werewolves, who once served as protectors for mermaids in the Kingdom of the Undine, now seek to eliminate all who dwell in the ocean — and Serena is about to find herself right in the middle of the deadly conflict.

Given the title of Werewolf Liaison, Serena is determined to make things right for her people. When she ventures to The Dry, she meets Liam, the werewolf with hazel eyes, and her whole world gets turned upside down. As Serena discovers the real history between werewolves and mermaids, she is left wondering who her true enemies are

My Review:
I have been excited about this book since I heard about its release. A good mermaid book is difficult to find.

Characters: 4/5
Terra definitely creates interesting characters, and they are easy to connect with right from the start. I am not even sure how to discuss these characters without giving too much away. Even the minor characters like Sasha and Cordelia are intriguing.

Serena - Serena is the outcast in her society. I like her and admire her bravery. She is playful and easy to fall in love with. Her journey is a tough one, and I was asking a lot of questions in the beginning trying to piece all the elements of Serena's story together. As scary as her title is (werewolf liaison) I definitely think she does a kick-ass job of it!

Ervin - Ervin is a childhood friend of Serena's. He is torn between his duty as a guard and his friendship with Serena. They have a platonic friendship, but a beautiful one. He really is a sweet character.

Kai - hmmm, intriguing. I like him!! Wow I hope Kai and Serena get a chance at love and make little painted mer-babies!

Liam - I love Liam to pieces. He is definitely my favourite character in the book and I am looking forward to seeing more of him in the rest of this trilogy.

King Merrick - what a tough position it is to be King. The king's role and the decisions he has to make tugged at my heart strings when I finally understood where his story was going.

Plot, Pace, Writing style: 4/5
Terra's writing style has definitely improved and smoothed out since writing the Akasha saga. Her style is more rounded and complete. The first half of the book was the ground-laying part, but the second half of the book hooked me and tugged at my heart strings. The plot is original and the pace is perfect. The ending is quite shocking and I think awesome stuff will follow in the next book.

Some of the smaller details I enjoyed about The Rising are the last names Terra has chosen: Moon-shadow, Air-spirit, Sea-fire. Another detail I enjoyed was how Terra incorporated the title and series name into the story.

Cover talk: 5/5
I love everything about the cover. It suits the story perfectly and it is definitely one of the prettiest I have seen for a while. I wouldn't mind having a paperback copy of this on my bookshelf.

Final Thoughts:  I enjoyed this series and will definitely be continuing with it!. This is one of the best mermaid books I have read so far.

Favourite Quotes

Kai lays a reassuring hand on Rayne's shoulder.
"Thank you."
Serena touches her fingertips to her lips. Kai's small actions toward Rayne mean more to Serena tha a thousand golden tridents.
~
"Wait," she says, pulling her hand out of his and placing it on his chest, a buffer between their bodies.

This is happening too fast. He is too old for me.

Serena bites her lip. "I'm sorry." She looks down, preferring the safe, murky depths of the ocean to the wild in his eyes.
Raising his fingertips to just under her chin, Kai tilts her face up so she is forced to look at him. "Don't look down, Serena. It's okay if you are not ready. Like I said – you are worth waiting for, and I will wait for you until my last breath."
